Cookies for Kids’ Cancer Fundraiser
Last Friday, ICE Chef Instructors Melanie Underwood and Marge Perry hosted a special fundraiser for Cookies for Kids’ Cancer, a charity committed to raising funds to support research for new and improved therapies for pediatric cancer.
Cookies for Kids’ Cancer was started by Gretchen Holt and Larry Witt after they were inspired by their 2 1/2-year-old son Liam’s battle with cancer. They were shocked to learn that the main reason over 25% of kids diagnosed with cancer do not survive is because of a lack of effective therapies and wanted to increase funding for research. Since then, Cookies for Kids’ Cancer has been raising money through bake sales, online sales, and donations.
Late in 2009, ICE’s kitchens were packed as volunteers baked approximately 30,000 cookies for Cookies for Kids’ Cancer bake sales nationwide. Only three weeks ago, Liam lost his battle and those who knew him wanted to do something special to celebrate his life. Chef Melanie organized the event and ICE gladly hosted this special class. Everyone decorated brownies, sugar cookies and cookie-pops with chocolate, icing and a plethora of different sprinkles.
Chef Melanie shared her favorite decorating tips and ideas, as well as some advice on making cookie dough. The event attendees really got their creative juices flowing and made a huge variety of cookies. They also enjoyed raffle prizes donated by OXO and Anolon cookware. Everyone took their cookies home and left with huge smiles. It was a celebration of love and life in memory of a special boy — all for a very worthy cause.
